Happy Valentine's Day

As my nine year old granddaughter told her mom, Grampa isn't going to take Mimi to a restaurant for Valentine's Day so she made her own.

I finally cleaned off the dining room table which still had Christmas remnants on it. The bottom right corner is a Goodwill box.

The flower arrangement a friend sent was very droopy so I picked out some flowers and put them in mini vases. The table runner is from my older granddaughter's tea party this past summer.

Better lighting.

The glasses are part of the set of my grandmother's wedding crystal.  I was trying different ideas to show the etching. This is apple juice.

This one is wine on my kitchen counter.

Washed, on my kitchen counter.  There must be at least 100 pieces in this pattern in my china cabinet with glasses in a variety of sizes and types. I would bet that there is at least service for 12 in each glass, possibly more. And that is after the breakage by my mother who carted them around to at least six houses. I have four five china cabinets at this point. This one holds all the crystal stemware behind glass doors and my mother's china pattern in the bottom cupboards. I would bet that my mother's china was never used by her or myself.  I hope to talk a granddaughter into it.

And Friday we said "whatever" to the heart healthy diet and Mr Merry took me to the ice cream parlor for lunch. He had the ginormous banana split.

And I had the apple dumpling sundae with a huge warm apple dumpling made from sweet dough surrounding a whole cored apple stuffed with cinnamon butter filling and covered in icing with ice cold homemade vanilla bean ice cream, whipped topping and almonds with a caramel drizzle.

Tomorrow we are enjoying a quiet evening at home with some frozen Trader Joe's chinese meals. All purchased prior to looking at labels for sodium content.

  1. Your table looks just wonderful, you'd probably make a killing if you ran a boutique bed n' breakfast--and your couple's treats look amazing! Happy Valentines Day Miss Merry :^)

  3. Your table does look lovely. And I love your grandmother's crystal (actually it looks a little like my mother's). We aren't doing anything special for Valentine's Day. Did give some chocolates and a cute kitty Valentine card to youngest granddaughter (she was over today). And your apple dumpling sundae looks delicious!

  4. That is such a beautiful table Miss Merry. You have to splurge once in awhile if you typically keep to the healthy diet. If you don't treat yourself, you'll fall completely off the wagon. Ask me how I know. :-)
We're having our 2nd annual cupcake decorating party with our friends tomorrow night and we're looking forward to it. I only have 48 cupcakes and 14 mini heart cakes to bake tomorrow before they show up.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  10. I love that sweet PINK tableau, and your strengthening hands which arranged it. What a lovely setting for a romantic Valentine's Day dinner, and it's wonderful that you were up to all the clearing-away and getting out and setting up. (retired caterer here, so I know whereof . . .)

I thought about your moments doing that sweet little task for those you love, and think that must be a good thought to be able to take up the reins of continuity like that. In wondering how to phrase some of it, I thought of those "Self Storage" units, and imagine your moments of care and arranging as partly "Self RE-Storage" in the simple moments of such a familiar ritual.

Just be careful, remember you're taking care of YOU, and Here's to SELF-RESTORAGE in all its meanings. Hugs from the Heartland!!

  12. Dear Miss Merry, I am so sorry I am late. Happy Valentines Day to you, dear friend.
Your photos are absolutely stunning! I can picture myself enjoying everything right there with you. I haven't had a banana split in decades! It looks amazing! Your wine glasses are gorgeous!

  13. Lovely table setting! Gorgeous crystal! I still have a few Christmas things to put away. I don't think I am going to put out so much stuff this year and the faux greenerey I think I will use live because it looked so good even after a month after Christmas. Brittle but it stayed where I put it. Mama never put out as much stuff growing up and what she did was so festive and we enjoyed it. Not so much clutter. We did get our faux corsages to wear every year on our coats. Ah the memories.
I haven't had a banana split since I just can't remember. I will soon though and maybe my husband and I can share one. Your pictures are so pretty on your blog.

  14. I love every single thing about this post. Your beautiful table. The crystal -- oh, I just love crystal like that! The fact that you went out and ignored the doc for a day (that ice cream looks to die for!) TJ's has some really excellent frozen meals. We found one with (I think) only 9 or 11 carbs per serving. And it was darned good! (Which reminds me, I need to get another one of those!) Happy Valentine's Day -- a lttle late but filled with heart.

  15. Your Valentine's table is beautiful! I love the pink dishes and the flowers. It's all just so pretty.

It's amazing how huge the crystal and china sets used to be. It seems like most people just don't host that many people now. I've had to add lots of extra pieces to mine in order to have enough of everything.

Your apple dumpling ice cream treat looks delicious!

  16. 'An apple dumpling a day keeps the doctor away.' Isn't that what they say?

What a sweet table! I am a decent cook, but I suck at presentation.
