I know I left on a cliff hanger with a table full of miniature cakes - well here is the rest of the story!
We went with pink and yellow lemonade instead of tea. But we did have tea cups!
My daughter made iron transfers for them to design their aprons.
These are the sweetest bunch of ten year olds you will ever meet!
Not only are they master cake decorators, they are also master cookie icers!
I spent lots of time on the tea party foods, but our favorite was
This tray of what one of the girl's mothers called "spring rolls". She is Filipino and these were a long thin cylinder of a wrapper rolled with shredded vegetables inside and fried until very crisp. They arrived fresh and hot and tasted pretty darn close to heavenly. We all loved them!
We finished with cupcakes and rainbow ice cream.
And then we baked mini loaves of chocolate bread!
After all the baking, the girls wrote and performed skits featuring the birthday girl. And every parent arrived on the dot at the end of the party to retrieve their daughters. And the gramma returned home exhausted.

ReplyDeleteOh, my GOODNESS (the fact that I mis-typed that as GODDNESS the first time---that's a little Freudian slip, I think, to capture my opinion of your complete and utter capture of GRANDMOTHERNESS). I was two days from Social Security when I was handed a tiny bundle who captured my heart, (and ten hours a day three days a week for the next ten years, but you're the QUEEN of the Castle). A long phone conversation with that one yesterday, of my ticket to GRADUATION, and a Save-the-Date call for invitations to her last CONCERT, a Tea, and her OWN Graduation Party---one of the few I've not catered over the years.

And they're sitting on MY RUG!!!---the exact one that is beneath my ottoman at my chair. Your decor and refreshments and all those things to do and take home and enjoy. ReplyDeleteThis looks like SO much fun! Cakes, cupcakes, bread and tea party food AND spring rolls. It just doesn't get any better than that. You put on a mean tea party Grandma. I think it looks more fun than fancy ones I've been to in London too. Look at those smiles. :-)

Doesn't it though, Betsy!! Those at hotels and Fortnum-Mason seem more rigid, somehow, bordering on religious in feel, with the presentation of the wee offerings on salvers and trays befitting an altar. And there's no laughing, much---no bobbing of hats and leanings in for shared "TEA" in the modern sense of gossip. They are an EXPERIENCE, to be savored for the majesty and history and heritage of long years. And you know, the absolute peak of an afternoon tea is looking across your room, to see a child and a Daddy or Grandpa with their knees beneath a tiny table---it's better than any romantic rose-filled champagne moment there is.
