I know we are all having a busy summer and I know I am overwhelmed at the moment. I have ideas for posts - just hard to find the time. Here is one about a fire truck.
According to my research Engine 1 was declared redundant and put up for sealed bid on June 27, 1943. The newspapers don't list the buyer, but apparently it was a gentleman about an hour or two south of us who put it in a building and there it sat.
His family recently approached a person who I think plans to run for mayor (not my choice but anyway) who facilitated the purchase for a private organization in town. It was brought to town a week or so ago with great fanfare.
I missed most of this part of the story and thought my husband was just taking me to watch it go down the street. Otherwise I would worn something besides stretched out old jeans and a t-shirt and maybe combed by hair. Since that didn't happen I spend the afternoon stepping away from home and newspaper photographers. They did get one photo in a crowd, recognizable by my distinctive purse.
They have started a fund raising campaign for $200,000 to restore the fire truck. This seems optimistic to me. Meanwhile I was under the understanding that the old firestation will be converted to offices and meeting space in the very near future. I am guessing that Engine 1 will be relocated soon, probably with a smaller trailer.

Nice to have a bit of history for everyone to see!
ReplyDeleteThe fire engine does look in good shape. The kids have other things than posing for a photo on their minds!
ReplyDeleteMy Sis and I kept our emotions pretty much in hand when our Dad passed away in his 84th year, after a valiant, years-long battle. He went home from living in Texas with Sis, to rest beside our Mother in our little old Mississippi town that we'd both been decades away from. He'd been Volunteer Fire Chief for more than forty years, beginning in my childhood.
ReplyDeleteBut after that sweetly-sad funeral and all those wonderful tributes, when we walked out of the church to see that old Fire Engine standing ready to lead the procession the long way around past our house to the cemetery, we just lost it entirely in that Mississippi sunshine.
As someone who had both brothers as volunteer fire fighters for years and years in her hometown, I can appreciate all of this hoopla for the firetruck. It's something that really gets into the blood. One of my brothers was also a fire inspector and both were also EMT's. I enjoyed seeing this post a lot. Hope you're feeling well Miss Merry.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and hugs,
Betsy
Wow, what a journey for Engine 1!
ReplyDeleteAmazing that it survived all those years tucked away and now gets to be admired again.
Love the photos.
That does look very cool. It does not run?
ReplyDeleteWhat an adventure for that fire truck! Good luck with the fund raising! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteThat is fascinating -- and what a fun occasion. I really loved the old pix and the new. I'm amazed at how it looks like it is still in very good shape. This sounds like a really fun and terrific day.
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I'm always in awe of people who keep and/or restore old pieces of history like that engine. It's a labor of love.
ReplyDeleteDear Miss Merry, your photos are wonderful! I hope you are feeling better, dear friend. Thank you so much for sharing.
