Memory Monday

My maternal grandmother Anne, her sister-in-law my great aunt Betty (Elizabeth) and my Aunt Mary whom I am named for.

They would have taken the "Dinky", our local trolley to the train and then on to Cleveland for the day to shop.  This was probably taken in 1945-1950. Photographers would snap photos of passersby and give them a numbered ticket to mail back with some money to have the photo mailed to them.

I wondered what the building behind them was. I googled Cleveland department stores in the 1940's and found a facebook page! I joined the page, posted the photo and had dozens of responses. One nice gentleman matched the windows with a photo of The Statler Hotel on Euclid Avenue. We had lots of discussion about the sign that starts with an "L". It is part of the building in the photo this man has and we think it might say "Lounge".  Another contributor found information that the hotel had a restaurant that was called "The Lattice Room" but I am not sure the letters match.

And that is my history lesson for the day!

  2. I don't think it's Lattice Room either but I still loved the history lesson. And your relations hats. What a wonderful era that was, when people got dressed up to go shopping or see a movie. More please. 🙂

  3. You have so much history you are finding. My family is scattered all over the place so I don't think we can find much history about them!

  4. Hello Mary,

Your relatives certainly seem to be enjoying themselves on their shopping spree.

We have always loved departmental stores but so many have disappeared from our high streets over the years and that is a great loss. Peter Jones remains our flagship departmental store in London but we have a long list of others which are no more.

A strange thing we found when coming to Budapest is that it had NO departmental stores. Indeed, the very concept of a departmental store seemed to baffle everyone and there are still no departmental stores. However, one thing we did find which took us down memory lane were Bakelite escalators. They are rapidly disappearing here now, but one or two remain.

  7. Very cool! I love history and enjoy metal detecting as a hobby. I once dug a token from a local Merchantile and researched it on the internet. It was neat to see a photo and an old newspaper add connected to the store. It really brough history alive!

  8. That's a nice photo of your family. I remember when the only place to shop was downtown.

  9. My never-ending love of a mystery---especially one with deciphering a code or writing---is kindled with the fun of another hunt---Once I spent so much time researching and dedicating many a blanket-huddled midnight to a quest for a lady of the 1800s stage who appeared with Edwin Booth, I totally got so run-down I caught the flu. Silly me.

I do believe the word there is LOUNGE, with two clues---the stylized windows on the postcard HAVE to be the artist's rendering of those fabulous cut-glass/stained glass of the Statler windows, AND the door in both versions has a circular approach, with the letters running a bit obliquely around a ledge above.

I LOVE your ladies---Your grandmother is all business, with her pocketbook clasped to her bosom, and a firm step toward the nearest sale. Your Aunt is so perky and eager for all those adventures, and your namesake looking away toward some other thought---perhaps an inexplicable moment of joy from a nebulous idea that there might be a YOU in her life someday.

Did I also say I have a story for everybody I see? It's not the gift it would seem to be. I LOVE that they rode the train to go shop in the city---we used to drive fifteen miles and catch the CITY (City of New Orleans) to ride to Memphis to shop because my mother was terrified to drive in Memphis.
