Monday

My week is off to a great start! How do you know when you are old? Could it be when you are so excited about a trip to the grocery store?

I had never been to a Trader Joe's. My local grocery choices are Aldi, Walmart and the local IGA.  My friend organized a field trip and we drove an hour and thirty minutes to a Trader Joe's. My first visit. The Pumpkin Brioche Twist will be breakfast tomorrow.

My friend says the store gets very busy, so we went when it opened. I brought this home for lunch.

And I bought this adorable pasta for a Halloween dinner we will be attending next week.  I can't wait for a return trip.

After I finished my delicious bisque, it was time for my volunteer church board meeting. We did some good, stuck our fingers in some financial dikes and I left feeling okay (sometimes I don't feel okay).

I mentioned a few weeks ago that my son had been promoted to detective. Well, now he isn't the only detective in the family. I joined our library's Murder Mystery Monday True Crime Podcast Club and attended my first meeting.

We had recently traveled out of state and I listened to all the required podcasts, made notes which I typed in to charts and graphs (because I am an official internet detective). Just call me Gladys Kravitz.

Actually it was very interesting and there was a lively discussion with a group of about a dozen participants aged from teenagers to grammas like me!  I can't wait until next month and need to get started on my homework for our next "case".

My poor husband finally got supper when I got home and we were just relaxing to the scanner when we heard our name! Our last name anyway. My son's ex-wife was driving with two of my grandsons when someone ran a stop sign and plowed into her.  Everyone is fine, the boys are a little scared, but the car had to be towed and it is not looking good.  But everyone got home safely and hopefully things will look better in the morning.

Wow. That's just Monday!  Tomorrow I am starting a new volunteer position!  I was asked to be a judge in our town's "Halloween Home Decorating Contest".  I will be visiting nine homes on Tuesday and nine homes on Wednesday, after dark, and helping choose five winners in the categories: Scariest, Best Lights and Music, Best DIY, Best in Show and Best Business.

My eight-year-old granddaughter is very excited to be serving as my assistant. I am thinking I will have to run to the dollar store tomorrow to get some judging accessories like scary headbands and light up necklaces.  I will be taking photos!

  1. I love Trader Joes. In Spokane we had one just a couple miles from home but here it's quite far across town. The lobster bisque is one of my favorites as is the bread. I've never tried the pasta. I've only been there once since since our move which is disappointing.
I'm sorry to hear about the accident and I hope everyone still feels fine in the morning. You are a busy lady and still volunteering for more. My best friend Jenny would love the Murder Mystery thing. Maybe when she retires she'll have time for fun things like that.
    Have fun with the judging!
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  2. Wow - you had an exciting day!
We have a Trader Joes about 45 minutes from us. I don't go often, but my daughter who lives closer goes regularly. They have some great things!
I remember Gladys... :) You'll have to be good to fit in her shoes! I'll be looking forward to hearing all about it and also your judging gig.
So glad the car was the only thing hurt in the accident.

  7. Yikes about the scanner! Once my mom heard a scanner calling the firetrucks out to our house. I was picking up my son from wrestling. My daughter had just gotten out of the shower when the phone rang. My mother started gabbling about the fire, and asking what was going on. My daughter said, "No. Everything's fine." My mom said, "Cara look out the window. Is a truck on fire in the driveway?" Cara dutifully went to the window and said, "I've gotta go." Tim was there and after things settled down, my daughter said, "Tim. You've got to learn when to use your emergency voice."

What fun. Enjoy the judging with your assistant.

  8. We have a Trader Joes about 15 ish minutes away; but I never go there. I went once and really didn't see why people rave about it. We also have an Aldi's within walking distance; but knowing the history of the store keeps me from going there. It was started by two brothers, who were Nazi's and put their own mother out of business. Granted that was years ago, but that left a bad taste in my mouth so I avoid them. Luckily I have a wonderful Giant Eagle Market Place also within walking distance and they have everything....almost. I did think your pumpkin pasta was cute. Hope you'll take a picture of the dinner you make for the gathering. Gladys Kravitz...lol, always loved that show, and can hear her voice in my mind. She was a hoot. Glad you're enjoying your club. Sorry to hear about the car accident, but am glad to hear everyone is ok. Having your granddaughter go with you to do the judging should be fun. It's not a holiday I've decorated for, but in the last 5-10 years it seems people are getting into it around here.

  9. I have never been to a Trader Joes...The nearest one to us is about 100 miles away. I've heard they have some really great and unusual items. So glad that no one was hurt in the collision. I know you must have been worried about your grandsons. How exciting to be selected as a judge. I think this would be so FUN to do. Hopefully you will be able to grab a few pictures to show us. Hope your weekend is wonderful

  10. LOL! I remember Gladys from Bewitched. That used to be one of my favorite shows.
We don't have a Trader Joes in Hawaii. I know a lot of local people from Hawaii love going to Vegas so they can go to Trader Joes. We ALWAYS go there when we visit our daughter in Illinois.
