Life in a Small Town

Still here.

I needed new jeans. My well loved, well worn, jeans have begun to split horizontally in the legs and I look either like a hipster or homeless person. I hate shopping. Our local Walmart is small and never has my size AND I am uncomfortable trying on clothes in the tiny dressing room and trying to see how they look. The only store that carries women's jeans in my town is Walmart so I ordered 4 pairs of jeans in the same size. I ordered at Walmart in case I would need to return them.

Keep in mind that they are all exactly the same size.

Pair one was so tight I could not get them up enough to zip them and they were about 12 inches too long.

Pair two was way too big; big enough I thought they could fall down if I tried to walk.

I can live with pairs three and four.

Today I went to our local Walmart where I can return them. There were seven people in line and one clerk. The person in the front had a issue. We waited about fifteen minutes. Then the other five went through the line. Then it was my turn. She processed the return, asked if I wanted the credit on my credit card or a store credit (credit card) and I left the desk.

Soon I hear people yelling my name all over the store. I have an unique name (it's not Miss Merry, but close). I was mortified. I walked back to the front - everyone is saying "Miss Merry, they are calling for you at the desk" and see the clerks waving.  Supposedly half my return went back to my credit card and she had to give me the other half in cash. This sounds fishy to me so I will check my bank online to see if I scammed them or what.  I don't think this is what the receipt says.

It turns out that the clerk noticed something was wrong and asked if anyone knew me. One of the people in line was the grandmother of a girl who was in my 4H club maybe 15 years ago and knew my name.  This is what it is like to live in a small town.

I hope I don't have to go back to Walmart anytime soon.

Meanwhile - I have four tickets to the Taylor Swift movie tomorrow at 11:30 am and we are ready to go!

My granddaughter has invited a new friend from school and is very excited for the movie and the restaurant lunch after.  My dolls are modeling our accessories.

My Indivisible group has planned a last minute protest against rising healthcare costs tomorrow during the movie. I am lending them my portable speaker with my playlist. I have spent WAY too much time today explaining how to use it to several people via text message.  It isn't that hard, I figured it out without instructions on the side on a road by Cracker Barrel.  I am regretting offering to lend it to them.

  1. Dear Miss Merry, I hope that the jeans you ordered work out for you! To be honest, and at the risk of sounding cheap, I buy a fair amount of clothes at thrift stores. Yes, you can try them on there, or if not, if you keep the receipt and try them on at home and find out they don't fit, they give you a few days to exchange for something else.
I am short, only about 5 feet 2, and a lot of new jeans are so long for me! But thankfully they can be cut and/or shortened by hemming, so this is fine.

I love your photos, dear friend, and was happy to see your post.

  2. You need to post more, I enjoyed your small town jeans tale! πŸ˜„ Okay, I either forgot or didn't know you were a Swiftie-- I just watched all that on our local news! Hope you have a good time Miss Swiftie! πŸ™‚πŸ€ŽπŸ‘

  3. My only comment today is that if you are not at least 5'8'' tall, all jeans are way too long. I'm 5'4" and unless it says 'short', I don't buy them... and 'short' is hard to find. That's my 2 cents.

    1. I should have mentioned that they were all "short" which is another thing my local store does not carry. You are so right they are hard to find. I am hoping someone else in my town can wear them!

  4. I do not understand the variation in women's clothes. It is not just jeans, but dresses too. And shirts. And shoes. It is a plot, I tell you. They are forcing us into those tiny little changing rooms, whether we like it or not.

  5. I recently got 3 pairs of pants in different colors but the same size; one was too big, one was just right and one was tight. So crazy!

  6. OK, one thing about living in Hawaii. I only wear capris or Bermuda shorts. It's too hot to wear long pants. I'm also now going with elastic waisted capris or shorts when I can. When I lived in Illinois, I always had to cut my jeans.
Have a great time at the Taylor Swift movie.

  7. What a mess. I've had that same issue with ordering online too. It's so frustrating!

  8. I may be the only person in the US who has never been inside a Walmart. Partly because there isn't one near me. I ordered some linen pants this past spring, all the same brand, all the same size. Two fit. Two fell off. Why? 🀷🏻‍♀️

  9. You've seen your movie and floated home on a pastel music cloud---would that all our outings be that colorful and sweet.

My town was WAY smaller, I think---once in the dollar store I turned to the back of my checkbook and saw that there wasn't one left, so I said hurriedly as I started for the door, "I don't have a check left---I'll grab one from the car."

An older man who knew me from my Main Street office. and well acquainted with waiting for that SS check of his own, said, "I'll pay fer it 'til your check comes." I still get teary-eyed over that.

And if it weren't for Woman Within (formerly Lane Bryant), I wouldn't have a rag in my closet.
