Still Here

Still here, just crazy busy.  A grandson whose soccer team is (hopefully) headed to state after tomorrow's game, school conference days so grandchildren home from school, doctor appointments, traveled 3 states away for a wedding, I can't remember what all we have been up to, but I will check my photos.

My church charity has had record breaking requests. I worked last Thursday and had six families show up who had their electricity shut off that morning. There is a mindset that something will prevent that from happening, but in reality it means we have to had fees to have it turned back on.

I had a grandmother raising a grandchild who was laid off from her job of 17 years.  I had several single mothers who were cut from 40 hours a week to 18-20 hours. I had a single mother of two with cancer who is on unpaid leave and they found five more spots on a PET scan. We had 28 applications before the board this week, I can't remember the rest of them.

Our client from a European country, a working resident here for almost 18 years, whose abusive husband neglected to renew her green card - we were able to pay the fees and get the paperwork approved and she is renewed. We paid almost $600 to renew it and a generous volunteer is paying over $1000 to apply for citizenship and a generous attorney is volunteering their legal services to apply for citizenship. She was unable to work when her card expired. So that was good news.

More good news was a benefactor who sent us an unexpected check for $10,000.

We picked the rest of our garden yesterday before our first frost. I had a huge box of green peppers which I took to the food bank this morning. There were several "shoppers" our food bank is laid out like a small grocery and at least five or six people waiting for a turn to shop.  I will be seventy years old this year and every person there was older than I am.

The loss of food stamps in my community will be devastating. Most of our clients use food stamps to supplement their budget. A senior citizen losing the $89 she gets a month in SNAP means the loss of most of her grocery budget.  The working single mother will have to use her rent money or utility money to put food in her children's mouths. It is just so sad.

We have not gotten our letter about healthcare costs for our Medicare Supplemental. I am very worried about it.

Anyway.  I will be back. Things have to slow down here someday.

  1. Miss Merry, thank God for the benefactor.
I was pretty angry 😠 😑 when I heard about the loss of food stamps. Even though I am in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ and it doesn't affect me, I feel for those people who have lost this, as my heart goes out to anyone having trouble.
I am happy to see your post.

  2. It's good to hear from you Miss Merry, missed you. Your charity work (as always) sounds sad, sweet, impressive. The loss of SNAP for people needing to eat... they said on the news tonight that the program has NEVER run out of money before in it's entire history. I'll just say it, if Kamala Harris was our president, our country would be in much less dire straits right now. The cruelty is too much. I'm glad to know people like you are out there at least.

  5. Glad to know that you are still here... just busy. Yes, you are one of the busiest people I know and your work to help people is wonderful. So many people are being hurt right now, we need to find more ways to help. Thank you for all you do.

  6. It's good to see a post from you. That donation was a great one!
We harvested our garden too and have had a few hard frosts since...

  7. These are nightmare scenarios. One winter we survived on WIC items and a deer we shot and froze in a snowbank. This is just plain cruel to all of the people in the US.
People in our area are gathering food and other supplies to give to food banks and free will stores.

  8. How can anyone support this cruelty? Nothing hidden all in full view and yet, what? More Ice agents while people go without food or shelter. Your charity work is so important. Much more so than it should be.

  11. Thanks for your help with those in need. My Medicare Supplement says it can change the price on it's anniversary date of when it was purchased, not the end of the calendar year. Mine is in June. Linda in Kansas

  12. I expect you will see lots more action at your church charity in recent days to come. I love what you did for the woman with the green card issues. What you did for all of them.

  13. You have been crazy busy!

I'm very worried about how the loss of SNAP benefits is going to hurt so many people. There's a foodbank near us, and it is already insanely busy. I can't imagine how it will be when those benefits are gone.

  14. Awww, such sadness and so many desperate people. How lucky they are to have a source of support when things go wrong and get bad. And bad will become worse. My heart hurts for our nation. Thank you for stepping up. I hopped over from "This & That"....and loved seeing your pictures of the wedding. The smiles all around brought a smile to my face! I'm an old blogger, and a grandma, too (but I didn't post a lot of blogs for a few years)

Thank you so much for stopping by to visit! I love your comments and suggestions and read them all. Due to spam, I will now have to approve all comments. Sometimes it takes me a hot minute to authorize comments due to grandchildren commitments. I apologize but I can't let those scammers get the upper hand!
