We are down to one juvenile participant in Field Trip Fridays. Today we headed to the Amish nursery for our tomato plants.
When I travel with my daughter we generally stop at about five other Amish nurseries before we reach this one. My husband is a one and done shopper.
I will be doing a return trip with my daughter for flowers and hanging baskets. This is not my hanging basket nursery.
I like my baskets with a variety of flowers and dangly vines. But this nursery has the best vegetable selection. Most of these nurseries also sell wholesale so you want to go early in the season before they ship everything out.
These are the tomato plants, the primary reason for our trip. We like our tomatoes early so we cheat with patio plants. The prices at the nurseries are usually half the price of something similar at Walmart (which is the only garden center in my town).
There were many Amish housewives shopping today and I tried to be respectful about photos. This group hired a man with a white suburban and a trailer. Most were buying large ferns. We caught up with the same group later at the Amish grocery store. They sell sandwiches and the ladies were lunching outside at umbrella tables.
This year's plan for the grampa gardener's raised beds. He puts the lettuce in pots. I made him a list to help with choices next year.
We got home just in time for a rainstorm. I'm sure the tomatoes are enjoying a drink.
Those Greenhouses look so pretty filled with plants! Nice that your littlest guy could enjoy the day with you!
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful tomato plants!
ReplyDeleteI was at the greenhouse today too! It's too early for us to buy tomato plants, but I got a nice planter for our porch.
ReplyDeleteGlad you made it home before the storm!
I would love to browse through those nurseries. Looks like they have a great selection.
ReplyDeleteWe have a Mennonites nursery-shop about 15 miles from here. I get my potted annuals there and they are not as pricey as some other places. PLUS...they seem healthier. It's a bonus to be able to get homemade candy and maple syrup there also.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great field trip, one I'd enjoy.
I have never seen such beautiful tomato plants. We have a while before planting.
ReplyDeleteThe Amish can grow and build just about everything. Funny how you lost a grandchild behind the tomato, so cute.
ReplyDeleteMy Friend Ken goes to Amish Country to Auctions when he's doing Picking for his Spaces at the Antique Mall, often he's the only one not Amish and says it's like stepping way back in Time. He gets some really great utilitarian things that you cannot buy in Arizona, the Primitives he gets are exceptional. The Reality Show featuring Amish and Mennonites did show the Dark Side of such Religions tho', it's not all Sweetness and Wholesomeness, but, few Religions are.
ReplyDeleteThe tomato 🍅 plants are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI love plants, too, and buy them from my neighbor. A friend gave me anthuriums, and another friend gave me a terrarium when they came over for lunch. Very nice people.
ReplyDeleteWhat produce I don't grow from my own seeds, I try to buy from Mattie's greenhouse. She has taken me to a huge greenhouse that is run by an English woman who married an Amish man years back. I'd never heard of that before.
