Busy. Very Busy. Lots to share when I get time.
This morning I got up extra early so Mr Merry and I could go explore our county fair for 1 cent each on senior citizen day. We entered the grounds around 7:30 so we could see the sites and leave.
The fairboard used 600,000 of Biden Bucks from the state and a family donated about 100,000 and got naming rights to build a new barn which displaced the rabbits and chickens. We wanted to see what a 700,000 barn looks like and what they did with the rabbits and chickens. The barn is unimpressive and the rabbits and chickens, which used to be in well preserved little barns with active superintendents and 4H workers taking pride in their care, are now in the goat barn.
Mr Merry had agreed to buy me a breakfast sandwich from the grange. We were blown away by food prices at the booths. $16 for chicken tenders and fries, $10 for fancy hot dogs. I could not have afforded to feed my family of five children anywhere at the fair. Entry fee is $10 per person so it would have been $60 just to enter (Mr Merry worked weekends).
We made it home by 8:30 and I am off to the charity office for the day. Last Monday we had a record number of applications and our board meeting ran very long. I am hoping this week might have less clients. We did receive a bequest in a will so that money will help carry us for a while.
Last night my dear husband picked a bucket of tomatoes, a bucket of green peppers, and zucchini and eggplant. I made another pot of salsa, an eggplant casserole and cucumber salad from one of the 10 cucumbers he picked (no more pickles!). This was after hosting five grandchildren for an overnight.

I wish you had pictures of the barn. I would have loved to see what that kind of money buys you these days. The casserole looks great.
ReplyDeleteFood at fairs and other public venues is very expensive. That is how they make their money. Thank you for sharing your news.
ReplyDeleteMiss Merry, I have honestly missed you. Those prices at the food booths sounded outrageous, even for a fair. For crying out loud, $10 for a hot dog! On the other hand, your eggplant casserole looks positively delicious. I am drooling on my keyboard!
ReplyDeleteOur community fair happens next week. I'm sorry the rabbits and chickens were displaced...
ReplyDeleteYou are always busy! Your eggplant casserole looks yummy!
I am always amazed at how active and busy you are but that is such a good thing....I see so many people our age seldom come out of the their and get out in the public...I like a nice balance between the both...Glad you enjoyed my posts on my Kitchen and how I decorated it in an Apple/Sunflowers theme... I never eat out at affairs like that because of how expensive it it and due to my IBS...If there is something that I really want, I will get it to go and bring it home to eat...We are expecting a cool down next week. I certainly hope that happens...
ReplyDeleteThanks for always stopping by!!

We have a free fair here, still rides and food at the fair are expensive!
ReplyDeleteNow I want some casserole now. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThink that 700,000 could have been better spent? I guess it's expected that things are gonna get more expensive over time but then you also price out a whole portion of the population. Sounds like a lot for a county fair. Your harvest and the food you made sounds delicious. Take care.
ReplyDeleteMiss Meryy I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your news.
I have become a penny-pincher. Pennies are not going very far. I really like eggplant casserole. I'm not surprised business has picked up at the charity office.
ReplyDeleteOh, the food prices are quite steep. That's bad. Although the casserole looks good.
ReplyDeleteThat Casserole looks good!!! Glad you got that Donation from the Dearly Departed to offer more Help to the Living.
ReplyDeleteYour casserole looks so yummy...and oh my, who could have imagined going to the fair was akin to visiting Disney?!?!
ReplyDeleteWe just had our county fair too. $14 to get we ate there one day but...it was pricey. The funniest thing? I was waiting in line to buy a water. A woman came rushing up and said 'quick! Give me a bottle of water! The portapotty is on fire!'
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous. Did they give her a water? I can see some of the vendors saying, nahhhhh.
DeleteIt's always a little disappointing when you see a lot of money spent on a new building and it doesn't live up to expectations, especially when it disrupts the layout for the animals. The food prices you mentioned are shocking, it's wild how expensive a family outing can be now.
ReplyDeleteYou're a whirlwind of activity, from the fair to the charity office and then dealing with all those vegetables and the grandkids. It's great to hear about the bequest, though. That kind of support can make a huge difference.
I just put up a new post, feel free to check it out at www.melodyjacob.com.
Your eggplant casserole looks fabulous! I love eggplant. Your garden did really well. Mine was just terrible. Everything fizzled out early. The cuke leaves all turned yellow and died. Your garden sounds like it really did well.
ReplyDeleteThe price of a hotdog at a fair is terribly high especially for a family visiting. Everything sounds way too high.
That casserole looks absolutely delicious. But with those outrageous prices, I would not have bought the hot dogs or chicken tenders.
ReplyDeleteMe again...Thanks for visiting again...I really can not wait for August to be done with...A month filled with too much sorrow for my family...Great idea about Christmas presents....The adults all get money for Christmas and I have already bought the twins a ton of outfits in a larger size so they will fit into them in the Spring/Summer...I bought them on Clearance for 75% off with an additional 15 % off coupon!! And I am giving my DIL money for both the twins Christmas and Birthdays to buy a toy or 2 for them and she will give me what she buys so I can gift it to them here at my house...This is what my MIL and my mother did with my kids...I hope you are having a good week!!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Deb

Hey Miss Merry - just popping in to say hi and I hope you aren't still so terribly busy!
ReplyDeleteGayla. Oatmealandwhimsy.blog ... Your fair sounds wonderful, and that casserole looks delicious! Have a great summer!
ReplyDeleteMy area is so rural, we don't have a fair!! lol...Crazy huh. But two cities on each side of us has already had theirs. I started to charger the camera battery and go cause people at the fair are so fun to photograph. When the kids were young, we ate before things like that, now that its just me, prices are so high, and I can't make myself pay those prices so I still eat before i go. lol
