I already shared our family's biggest Thanksgiving memory - my parent's wedding on Thanksgiving morning 1955.
One of my favorite memories (no photos) I can share now that my mom has passed would be in 1974. My boyfriend and I had already been guests at two Thanksgiving dinners and my mom (not really a cook) had scheduled hers for 6 pm. We waddled in the house, I helped with last minute table setting and she pulled out the turkey. Which was raw because she never turned the oven on. By the next Thanksgiving I was married and Thanksgiving became my problem. Since I invited both families, it also meant only one dinner.
Thanksgiving 1993. My brothers and there families came from out of state for Thanksgiving. My mother hired a photographer to take family pictures on Thanksgiving day. It was below freezing with high winds. There is one photo with our hair straight up in the air.
This thanksgiving was maybe around 1997. We have a tiny house. In order to seat everyone, including extended family who all have larger houses than ours, we would move all our furniture into the garage and set up in the living room. To get to the kitchen you went out the front door (above) walked around the house and went in the kitchen door. Basically I stood in the kitchen doorway and handed things to someone at a table.
2019, the cutest little turkey granddaughter.
Zoom Thanksgiving 2020. The guy in the photo with the fanta bottle is our governor spying on us. We all agreed it was the best Thanksgiving because no one had to clean their house or drive. But did we learn? No.
2001. I couldn't bake one pie or two pies or three pies. I made individual pies for everyone to enjoy.
It's not just Thanksgiving, it is the day my teenage tech support comes to visit.
My youngest daughter and her husband purchased a large home with an open floor plan a few years ago. She has three rooms full of tables that all flow into her huge island for serving. She has been crowned Queen of Thanksgiving. This year I am showing up with a ham, oyster dressing and ice cream pies.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
*Update - this was the seating set up at my daughter's house for the football game. I hope they are joking, lol.

Loved all the individual pies--wow! Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving, Miss Merry :^)
ReplyDeleteOh I Loved these hilarious Thanksgiving Memories, I think we all have had Holiday Faux Pas that were particularly memorable in humorous ways. My Dad was always in charge of Thanksgiving when he was alive coz he was a Retired Master Chef. Once Mom was living alone she went back to not celebrating Thanksgiving since she wasn't an American so she never celebrated it until she met my Dad. And she found it odd he celebrated Stolen Land Day at all, being Native American. But, he enjoyed cooking for everyone and inviting anyone who didn't have Family to spend it with, so he always had a crowd at Thanksgiving at his Home.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteLovely photos and thank you so much for sharing your memories. Happy Thanksgiving 😊
ReplyDeleteIndividual pies????!!! You, my dear, are nuts. In the best way possible, of course.
ReplyDeleteI wish my daughter lived close by and had a large home too. Sigh... Unfortunately, we have the only actual house here in Hawaii for our family. The others live in condos or townhouses and can't comfortably fit everyone easily. My nephew is a emergency room nurse so our Thanksgiving will be next week. We're calling it a Holiday Party. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat amazing stories! Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI went to a dinner for Thanksgiving at a friend's place. They had big couches surrounding a large TV on the wall for everyone watching the game. They had tables strung out in the very very clean workshop they have and all the food was in another area in crockpots and other containers. It was pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteLooks like having a large area is a good solution.
One year, I had people sitting on my stairs and all over our tiny house with food plates on their knees!
Hello Mary,
ReplyDeleteWe have wandered here from Lawn Tea and stumbled upon your wonderful Thanksgiving memories.
Your first recollection of eating two Thanksgiving dinners reminded us of the usual situation here in Budapest on Christmas Eve which is the main day of celebration. Most young people will have at least two Christmas Eve lunches/dinners/ festive feasts as they are expected to go to several homes on this day. Indeed, with the increasing divorce rate, four festive meals can be eated with mothers, fathers, mother-in-laws and father-in-laws all holding the festive event. So exhausting and stressful.
It is great that you have now passed on the mantle of Queen of Thanksgiving although you do seem to have cooked up a storm regardless. We hope you all enjoyed a Happy Thanksgiving and made more joyful memories to look back on.
That football seating cracks me up. The individual pies are BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteGreat memories! I haven't opened the computer for two days and just spent time with Hubby and family. We've watched four Christmas movies already! It's been wonderful. I'm glad you had a good time and hope the football seating went well.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Great memories, happy weekend. Virginia
