It's officially summer at my house! The day the day lilies bloom!
When we first bought our house in the 1970's, my mom and I would drive around railroad crossings on country roads with car seats in the back seat and shovels in the trunk to dig up clumps.
I started with a few clumps in the front of my house and every so often I split them. These are the side of my garage.
These are not the OGs. We dug those up before we built the porch and moved them along the driveway. Please do not enlarge the photo. There has been zero weeding this year and the best part of the lilies is that they cover and outgrow the weeds.
And I call them day lilies when they are in bloom and ditch lilies when they are finished blooming.
Tomorrow we are leaving on vacation for 36 hours. Mr. Merry is in a tizzy. He hates to leave the house and I am dragging him kicking and screaming and pouting. We are going two whole hours away, stopping for lunch, shopping at an air conditioned flea market, eating dinner in an air conditioned restaurant and going to an air conditioned "Amish" theater for a show. I am sure there are no Amish involved in the theater but using the name means there will be nothing offensive. We will then spend the night in an air conditioned hotel, have breakfast at an air conditioned restaurant, shop at some air conditioned shops and have lunch at an air conditioned restaurant on the way home. I think he will survive.
Taco salad again. My lettuce is very very sad in this heat. And my tomatoes are still green for the most part.
Sometimes if I don't like the look of the lettuce at the store I don't buy it. I make a salad with cucumber 🥒 tomatoes 🍅 and onions...the odd time I add either red, orange or yellow pepper. I make my own salad dressing with either avocado 🥑 or extra virgin olive 🫒 oil, lemon 🍋 or lime juice, salt and pepper. Your salad looks good. Your day lilies look gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI remember those lillies from when I was little. My Mom had them around the yard too. I remember pulling off the petals and using them to decorate my mud pie "cakes". :-) I think Dennis feels much like you do. I could very easily become a hermit. Once I'm out and about I'm fine, but the thought of packing or even going anyway exhausts me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment on my post. I read it to Piper and she is glad you like dolls too. I think she's realizing she's not alone.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
I gotta say I totally get Mr. Merry but hope you two have a real air conditioned time! 😅
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun get away. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI love day lilies! Here they are called Tiger lilies when they grow wild.
ReplyDeleteWe had taco salad last night too!
Have a great little get away.
Sounds wonderful! I used to love getting away with my hubby. Though we loaded up our 'mules' and camped in our truck and trailer even on hot days.
ReplyDeleteYour salad looks wonderful on those blue plates!
Check out those lilies! Fantastic! Have a wonderful time on your getaway. I hope the play is good but even if it isn't, you're in air-con. (I know of which I speak. The other night we went to a play and couldn't understand a word between the accents and the sound system. But it was air conditioned and so we loved it!)
ReplyDeletePoor Mr. Merry, what he must endure!! Daylilies bloom in July here. I also have a lot of them and I also have done no weeding.
ReplyDeleteHave fun on your outing!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for stopping by!! I look forward to the day when I can have Tea parties with my twin granddaughters....Sounds like a wonderful trip...Enjoy and I can not wait to hear how it went and if hubby survived!!! ENJOY!!

I love taco salad. Hugs. xx.
ReplyDeleteI love tiger lilies. They remind me of our dirt road as a child. It was lined with them. Good luck with your trip. Remember to use your travel time wisely. Lord knows when you'll have him as a captive audience again!
ReplyDeleteThe lilies are a cheerful sight in that bright yellow color. Bouquets of lilies smell nice when they are fresh but once they start to wither, they kinda smell like cat pee in my opinion and that's when they are ready to be ditched. Enjoy your short time away.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad's aunt started with a small patch of hippeastrum, and with the divide and replant strategy she ended up with a border over 1 m wide around her very large garden and their holiday (and her eventual retirement) home - a border of beautiful flowers always reminds me of Berys.
